Busy Summers

The summer of ten years ago was hectic.  I was teaching a doctoral class, commuting close to 6 hours a day, while trying to show a house (and then pack a house) and parent two babies.  Ten years later, I'm still juggling it all!  This week has been intense as I teach full day workshops, run to get the kids from camp and transport them to baseball and basketball.  We had too many games this week!

There are new pictures in both June and July.

It has been a while since I've written because life has been a bit crazy for us. On our way to PA on June 14, we stopped in Chester to see two houses, just for fun, really. Though we did not intend to buy a new home for another year or two, we fell in love with one of the houses, its location on a beautiful cul-de-sac street, and it's 8 acres of property (mostly wooded). When our bid was accepted on June 17, life heated up, and it has barely given me a moment since. We spent about 12 days working frantically to prepare our current house for sale. Projects that we had planned throughout the summer and fall were quickly pushed up, and thanks to the efforts of all our parents, we were able to make the house look great in a very short time. We listed it and within a week had several offers. This is great news because living in a "showing" house with twin infants is a challenge, to say the least. We will be moving in late August.

So there has been a lot of change around here, and Megan and Ryan have changed too! Mobility is the word. Both are super crawlers, and they love to explore. It's most difficult, of course, when they go in two different directions, which they do often. They love to crawl in circles around the downstairs - down the hall, through the living and dining rooms, around the kitchen, and back again. They have taken to playing "fetch" with themselves and each other. They find a toy, throw it, chase it, pick it up, throw it again, and keep chasing it.

They have become adept at pulling up and sitting down and at opening drawers and doors, so they are pretty much into everything I don't want them to be in. We are working on discipline and setting limits. Megan is receptive. She usually listens and behaves. Ryan just laughs at me. There is no other way to describe his face than by "shit-eating grin." I think he will be the one to make me pull my hair out in the next few years.

Megan is the sweetest baby. Her daddy has taught her that noses go "ding ding ding," and she will test anyone who holds her, her stuffed animals, and any toy that has a nose. Her pointer finger is everywhere, and she "talks" nonstop. She rarely cries or fusses, and I know that if I only had her, I would have no idea that raising a baby could be difficult.

Ryan, on the other hand, challenges us every day! His temper is fierce, and he lets us know when he is not getting his way. However, he is my cuddler, and he always makes me laugh. Currently he is heil Hitlering everything; sometimes with his toys in his hands, but often not. My favorite picture of the two of them is in the July album. Ryan looks like he is answering a question, and Megan is laughing at him. It's ironic because Megan is usually the studious one, and Ryan is the imp. The picture captures them opposite, and it just makes me laugh.

We took them to the beach for the first time on July 4th. Megan loved playing in the sand, but she was more timid at the water. Like her first experience crawling on the grass, she wasn't quite sure she wanted to touch the waves. When Rick lowered her feet, she curled them up. It was a classic Megan move. Classic Ryan only took about a minute to find something disgusting to put in his mouth.

We are looking forward to celebrating their first birthday in Vermont. Hopefully life will give us a short reprieve before we begin to pack, move, and set up the new house. It's exciting but exhausting - especially with soon to be toddlers to chase!
